We have gathered this collection of zillij patterns from our zillij tile artisans in Marrakesh and Fez. Morocco has some of the last traditional workshops producing zillij tile, the living craft of hand–cut glazed ceramic mosaic tile that was developed in Andalusia in the twelfth century. Zillij tile can be used to adorn walls, floors, stairs, columns, pools and baths, balconies, interior courtyards and garden pathways. Our zillij tile tables, fireplaces and fountains are contemplative objects of beauty for architectural spaces.
In addition to the selected designs in this collection, we can reproduce any zillij tile pattern by special order. Each project is unique and our workshops produce this traditional craft at affordable prices for commissioned custom design projects.
Zillij can be ordered as individual mosaic pieces or as mosaic tile panels. To produce a panel, the individual mosaic tiles are assembled face down and fit together like puzzle, concrete is poured over the back and left to harden in a durable, easy to install slab. Zillij panels are three centimeters thick and are available in sizes up to one square meter. Zillij tile is available in fifteen colors. Every glaze recipe is hand-mixed and the tiles are baked in kilns fired by olive pits and pith. This process creates subtle variations in the color of each glazed tile. Color samples may be ordered upon request.
