Projects include custom lighting and moushrabyia woodwork for Martyn Lawrence Bullard Design: The Red O restaurant project began with inspiration photos of Moroccan brass filigree lanterns provided by MBL Design. We created shop drawings for our metal artisans, who replicated the design in a scale made to MBL’s exact specifications in metric. We also produced custom moushabiya woodwork panels for the bar and banquette areas in the restaurant as well as an eight point star Marrakesh Tile design in black and white that was ordered from our collection in our warehouse. The lanterns and the woodwork were air shipped to LA direct from Marrakesh.
Another recent project was the creation of custom Moroccan plaster arches for Vosges Haut Chocolat in Beverly Hills. Our client, Katrina Markoff, was inspired by Moroccan plaster arches in a beautiful room designed by Alberto Pinto. We reproduced this design from a photo in the Pinto’s book “Orientalism’. This style of Moorish arch is called Muquarnas, which is one of the most important decorative elements of Islamic architecture; also called stalactites. They are composed of small arches carved of the building material and arranged on top of each other forming honeycomb arches. We worked from elevation drawings provided by Katrina’s architect and scaled the design to suit the specifications for on-site installation. The entire design is executed in plaster and was hand carved by a team of master ‘gebs’ artisans in Marrakesh. We also shipped this custom order by air to LA direct from Morocco.
